List Of Top 10 Most Abused Prescription Drugs In Nairobi

This is a list of prescription drugs mostly abused either through fake prescriptions or through refill of one prescription more than once. Prolonged use of these medication leads to addiction and dependence. Emergency contraceptives (P2s) are raising concern since the use is getting out of control. A majority of young adults are using it more than recommended.


Emergency contraceptives {levonorgestrel}

In most chemists, it sold as an OTC. Oral emergency contraceptive may help to prevent a pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse or failure of a contraceptive method. Repeated administration within a menstrual cycle is not advisable because of the possibility of disturbance in the cycle.

Bromazepam

This is medication prescribed for short-term use in anxiety. Bromazepam belongs to the class of medications known as benzodiazepines and it works to reduce anxiety by affecting certain substances in the brain called neurotransmitters.

Diazepam

This is also a benzodiazepine used in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia with anxiety, child night terrors and somnambulism, acute alcohol withdrawal, acute panic attacks, status epilepticus, convulsions due to poisoning, cerebral spasticity, muscle spasm, as a rectal solution and acute anxiety and agitation. Mode of action is by potentiation of effect of Gamma-amino butyrate (GABA)

Concomitant use of benzodiazepines may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.

Alprazolam

Alprazolam is medication prescribed for short-term use in anxiety associated with depression. Mode of action is by potentiation of effect of Gamma-Amino butyrate (GABA).

Midazolam

Midazolam is medication used for anesthesia, procedural sedation, trouble sleeping and severe agitation. Mode of action: Midazolam is known to potentiate the inhibitory effects of amino butyric acid (GABA) in the CNS.

Codeine Phosphate

It is an active ingredient in some cough suppressants and painkillers Indications: Mild to moderate pain especially of visceral origin, coughing and diarrhea.

Zolpidem

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic of imidazopyrimine class used in short term management of insomnia. Like benzodiazepines, it interacts with a GABA receptor complex and shares some of the pharmacological properties of the benzodiazepines it also binds to omega 1 receptor.

Dihydrocodeine

Dihydrocodeine is an opioid agonist analgesic used to relieve moderate to severe pain including pain. It is more potent than codeine.

Morphine

Used in prolonged relieve of severe and intractable pain acute or chronic; opioid adjunct during general anesthesia; adjunct in acute pulmonary edema; relief of severe dyspnea.

Rohypnol

This is more of a street drug than pharmacy drug. It belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. It is a hypnotic drug for short-term use.
